The Surface Pro 4 is the best Surface yet. It’s thinner and lighter than last year’s Surface Pro 3, while packing in a bigger screen and more power. The new 12.3-inch display is stunning, and the Intel Core i5 processor provides plenty of oomph for everyday tasks. Battery life is excellent, and the included Type Cover keyboard is one of the best you’ll find on any 2-in-1 device.
The Surface Pro 4 is available in a variety of configurations, with prices starting at $899 for the base model with an Intel Core m3 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. Stepping up to an Intel Core i5 processor bumps the price to $999, while adding 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage will set you back $1,299. The top-of-the-line Surface Pro 4 features a Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage for $1,799.
For my review unit, Microsoft sent me the mid-range model with an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. That’s the sweet spot in terms of price and performance, and it’s the configuration I’d recommend for most people.
The first thing you’ll notice about the Surface Pro 4 is its gorgeous 12.3-inch display. With a resolution of 2736 x 1824, it’s one of the sharpest screens you’ll find on any tablet or laptop. Colors are incredibly vibrant, and text looks incredibly crisp. It’s a joy to look at, whether you’re browsing the web, editing photos, or watching movies.
The Surface Pro 4 is also noticeably thinner and lighter than its predecessor. At just 0.33 inches (8.4mm) thick and 1.69 pounds (766g), it’s easy to hold in one hand for extended periods of time. It’s still not as light as some competing tablets like the iPad Pro (0.27 inches/6.9mm and 1.57 pounds/713g) or the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 (0.22 inches/5.6mm and 0.86 pounds/392g), but it’s much easier to carry around than a traditional laptop.
One other change worth mentioning is the new Type Cover keyboard. It’s now backlit with 1.6mm of key travel for a better typing experience. The keys are also spaced further apart, which makes them easier to hit when touch typing at high speeds. The trackpad has also been improved, and now supports Microsoft’s Precision Touchpad standards for better accuracy and gestures support.
Under the hood, the Surface Pro 4 packs an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of solid state storage. That’s enough power for everyday tasks like web browsing and email, but if you’re planning on doing more demanding work like video editing or gaming, you’ll want to step up to a more powerful model with a Core i7 processor and 16GB of RAM.
In terms of battery life, Microsoft promises up to 9 hours of web browsing or video playback on the Surface Pro 4. In my own testing, I was easily able to get through a full work day with around 6 hours of screen-on time with moderate use. That included some web browsing, social media checking, light photo editing, and occasional video streaming over Wi-Fi. If you’re planning on doing more intensive work like video editing or gaming, you’ll probably want to keep your charger handy though.
The Surface Pro 4 comes with Windows 10 Pro pre-installed, which includes all the features from Windows 10 Home along with additional business-focused features like BitLocker encryption and remote desktop access. If you’re not planning on using those features though, you can save yourself $100 by opting for the less expensive Surface Pro 4 with Windows 10 Home instead.
Overall, the Surface Pro 4 is an excellent 2-in-1 device that hits the sweet spot in terms of price and performance. The gorgeous 12.3-inch display is a joy to use, and the thin and light design makes it easy to carry around with you everywhere you go. The included Type Cover keyboard is one of the best you’ll find on any 2-in-1 device, and battery life is excellent thanks to the power-efficient Intel Core i5 processor inside.
